How to Tell Fortunes at Parties

If you’ve always been called “intuitive,” “psychic” or one gifted with the “second sight,” then you might be able to cash in on this inherent talent by learning how to tell fortunes at parties. With a growing interest in spirituality, intuitive insight, divination, astrology and a host of other more New Age facets, nothing can liven up a party or event like consulting an entertaining fortune-teller.

If you know a thing or two about palmistry, crystals, tarot cards, scrying, runes, tea-leaf reading or any other forms of readings or divination, all you need to do is ask around to friends, coworkers, relatives and other acquaintances to see if they know of any upcoming social events that could benefit from some fortune-telling. If you’re just starting to branch out in this professionally, you could offer to provide your services free of charge in exchange for a written testimonial or another creative, joint-venture marketing ploy.

Getting Into Character
While there’s no need to dress up like a gypsy or Elvira, it is important to remember that people hold certain stereotypes about fortune tellers that they expect to see fulfilled. In this respect, you should treat your fortune telling parties as a costume party of sorts. With an eye toward the mysterious and mythical, coordinate your clothing, accessories, hair, make-up and other details towards giving you an air of spirituality and authority. If you can pull it off without sounding ridiculous, you may even want to employ a hint of an accent…

Setting the Mood
Get into character, which is only the beginning. You also need to invest some time and attention toward creating an atmosphere and mood of mystery, adventure and the supernatural. This can be accomplished any number of ways, including: lighting, drapery, the setting of your reading table and chairs, music or any number of other “props”. Work to create a cozy, comfortable atmosphere that allows your participants to relax and unwind, while maintaining an open mind.
