The relevance of being able to type

by Chris Allen

Created on: March 23, 2010

Being able to type is very important in today's day and age with technology, especially computers,  being so commonly used in our day to day lives. Big businesses, small business, doctors offices, hospitals, schools, homes, the list goes on and on but everyone has to use a computer somewhere and at some point these days, they are simply non-avoidable. Being able to type can help you out in several ways;

First you can get your assignments, goals, or work done much quicker if you are able to type well. The average gwam (gross word per minute) is around 50 words per minute. The faster you can type with little to no errors the quicker you can be done with your work and move on to better or more enjoyable activities, like spending time with family and friends, watching a movie, or finishing up that book you have been reading for the past month but simply haven't had the time to finish up.

Secondly being able to type well can help to land you a better job than being at McDonald's flipping hamburgers for the rest of your life. Typing is necessity in the work force these days because everyone uses a computer at work, if not all day then for several hours out of your work day. You will likely being using Windows software programs like those included in Microsoft Office, which include Word and Excel to name off the two most commonly used programs. Both of these require you to know how to type effectively or else you may not be good at getting your assignments in on time. Being able to use all ten digits of your hands as opposed to using your two index fingers to type at a slow pace will earn you more points to being hired. So if the first option doesn't grab your attention as to typing's importance in modern society then certainly the ability to earn more money should.

There are several ways that you can go about learning how to type if you do not know how already. Firstly, you can enroll in a local community college and take a keyboarding class there and learn with an instructor who already knows what it is exactly that they are doing. The second option would be to go out and buy a program for your home computer and do it on your own time, but to get something like typing down you have to be very consistent with your schedule with learning or you won't make any progress.

Typing is a skill like any other and will take time to get to an effective typing pace so don't get discouraged if it takes you longer than a few weeks or a few months, just keep at it until you make it to where you are comfortable with your progress, but be sure not to stop using the proper methods or you might slide back into the two finger trap.
