The gloom and doom has got to stop. Watching our congress at work is one of the most depressing things I have ever seen and it is not the Democrats that disappoint. I am so disappointed in the people screaming about abortions and the ignorance that they flaunt. I know extreme passions fuel idiotic behavior, but didn't your father ever tell you that the quiet man who speaks sound thoughts gets a lot farther than a mob.
John Boehner (R) screaming while speaking at congress making inflammatory statements that just were not true. Republican staffers and congress members standing on the balcony inciting the crowds.
According to the US News and World Report, there are 63 million registered Democrats, 47 million registered Republicans, 32 million registered as independents or with minor party.
Yet they say that the American people wanted the health care bill defeated. I don't know who they were speaking to but I asked 74 people today what they thought of the health care bill passing.
55 were thrilled. Of those 55, 27 did take the time to mention how disappointed they were with the republicans. Of that 55, 37 were democrats and the other 17 were republican. The other 19 spouted out anger. I heard things like, I won't be able to get my knee surgery or I'm not waiting months for bypass surgery.
One individual who was a waitress stated that her taxes were now going to double and she would have to pay a lot more for health care. To this individual I asked her if she had insurance. She stated no that she couldn't afford it. I then said that I imagined she didn't make much money in her job. She stated about $17,000 a year.
I then told her that she would under this new plan be able to afford insurance and probably wouldn't pay much at all. I further pointed out that her taxes would not go up and that the burden was put on the companies and the wealthy. She changed her tune real fast.
The other individuals just needed an explanation of the plan. I gave them copies of news articles that outlined the plan and several print outs from sights like AARP. Once they understood what the plan would do, they too were also for it. There were only 4 individuals that I could not turn.
Many said "then why did the republicans say..." when they heard the truth and I explained the differences in the parties also taken from Comptons and Websters. Many later stated that the Republicans were greedy, selfish individuals with no morals.
People really didn't understand the plan and it is important that we at least give the plan a chance to work. If it fails then the Republicans can sit up on the hill and look at repeated re-election.
However if it succeeds, then the republicans are going to have a hard time getting their seats again. I am certain that we will see a reduction in party membership.
It is very clear to me that we needed this bill. Yes there are many who state that it is not constitutional to force people to buy something that they don't want. But it is those same people who end up crying for care because they can't pay.
They are the same people who end up having their care payed for by public programs. I too am one of the low income beneficiaries of the plan, however I am willing to pay something for my coverage. I just can't afford what they charge now and then get my pre-existing conditions disallowed at the same time.
