Budgeting offers many benefits. First and foremost, budgeting allows you to be organized. Organization in your finances will help you maintain your accustomed standard of living and will allow you to see if and where you are wasting money. Second, budgeting allows you to plan for the future. This planning is important should you want a nest egg when you retire, should you want to send your children to college, and/or should you want to improve your quality of life (e.g., plan a vacation, take up a hobby, etc.). Finally, budgeting will create consistency in your finances. This consistency will enable you to handle life’s surprises without having to financially suffer.
Organizing your finances will help you maintain your accustomed standard of living as well as allow you see wasteful spending patterns. You have a particular way you like to live. If you do not organize your finances, you will never know exactly how much money you have, what you have paid, how much you owe, and how much you can afford, to name a few. As such, you may not believe that you can afford to better your life, even though you may actually be able to; you may also believe that you can afford to better your life, even though it may not be financially possible at this time. Organization in your financial life, which will be achieved through budgeting, will shed light on these financial mysteries in your life.
Planning for the future is probably the primary reason for budgeting. Whether you want to retire wealthy, send your kids to college, buy a bigger house, or take a vacation, planning for the future through budgeting is critical to achieving all of these goals. You may be young and think that planning for retirement now is a waste of time. However, the more you save now, the more you will have when you retire. It is never to soon to start planning for the future, whatever your future may be.
Budgeting helps create consistency with your finances. Although it is not possible to predict every financial event that occurs in your life, having a budget will help you plan for the surprise bills if and when they occur. Even though you cannot predict the surprise bills, having a budget will enable you to deal with them when they arise. Therefore, life’s little surprises will not leave you in a financial vortex from which there is no escape.
Remember, organization, future planning, and consistency are all benefits of budgeting. Take the time and create your budget as soon as possible. The sooner you budget, the sooner you can start taking advantage of these benefits.
