A Crying Shame
There were kites floating in the sky,
the green was overgrown with feet
following the distractions strewn about
of a Sunday. No one noticed the child
gazing up at the hole between clouds,
through which poured a golden shaft
of sunlight. No one thought to question
the expression in her expectant eyes,
waiting to see God appear to claim

light settled on her eyes and drew tears
before freeing her suspended heart
from amber. Feet followed the distractions
and kites continued to color the sky,
even after the child had started doubting.
