Onward to the Future!

Winter Scud, other wise known as Winnie, was fast approaching an age she had never anticipated reaching.

Her parents belonged to a generation slightly pre-empting the hippie era of the sixties; perhaps even the instigators of flower power and love children for all she knew.

Winter felt nothing during her lifetime would ever have the impact on the world of her parents generation. Such as it was; after all what had they really achieved?

From Winnie's position all they had done was put young women at the mercy of manipulative men, caused a lot of people to transmit STD's and see a situation in the world where women were not merely allowed to work but more, expected to work outside the home.

If she really thought hard on it there were a few more points with which she would have loved to stab her parents. Marijuana being the least of them. Just what damage the sixties had done to the modern world will only be uncovered when the next sixties comes around.

Winnie imagined it discussed in universities, if they still existed, and courses being taken to avoid such disaster happening again.

Naturally her parents were still of the opinion what they did was right, what they did was freeing to women and men alike. Pfft! That they stubborn massaged their own ego's pissed her off no end.

Growing up Winnie went through a series of changes in her opinion of her parents. At first they were really cool. The bus they lived in had peace signs all over it and they got to travel the entire country never going to a real school but sadly never having any friends either.

Some time around sixteen, it no longer felt cool. Winnie wanted to go to a normal school and meet normal people; people who lived in houses and wore clothes. Yes, it had got to the embarrassing stage. Winnie didn't like 'freedom' any more.

Fate must have been on her side as it was around this time her pot toking father had his first heart attack and they were forced to park up and take root in a small town called Devonside.

Joining the local school for her final year, Winnie was for the first time in her life, subjected to bullying and harassment. Some was due to her unusual name, some due to her hippie parents but mostly due to her academic standards being so much ahead of the government school.

Few were the teachers who praised her successes. In fact most of the teachers seemed to resent that she had been home schooled and learnt more than she would have had she attended formal
