Wolverine is my all-time favorite superhero. I’ve been a huge Wolverine fan since the late 1980s, and at times wish I possess his natural abilities. Wolverine possesses the mutant powers of superhuman agility, senses of smell and hearing, ability to heal from injuries at exceptional speed, making him virtually inviolable. His amazing healing power also greatly retards his aging. What is fascinating about Wolverine is that he has unbreakable adamantium skeleton and razor-sharp claws, his principal weapons, which are actually bones that lie within his forearms. Wolverine is also extremely intelligent. He has traveled the world and amassed extensive knowledge of foreign languages and cultures. He can communicate in many languages which is very impressive.

Wolverine is the best at what he does, which is fight. At 5’3, he is so ferocious in battle. He doesn’t fear any man, and like a true warrior, he gives it his all in combat. Wolverine is an expert of virtually all forms of martial arts and is very familiar with nearly every fighting style on Earth. He also has a broad knowledge of the body and pressure points. Wolverine is built to take on an entire army solo and still come out the victor.  I love when Wolverine lapse into a "berserker rage" while he’s fighting, and he lashes out with the intensity and aggression of an enraged animal. He’s like the perfect killing machine because of how relentless and unstoppable he appears. Wolverine does not enjoy killing or giving in to his berserker rages which makes him noble. He’s not only one of the X-Men’s central figures, but the most loyal and fiercest member of the team.

One of my favorite comic book covers is the Wolverine Limited Series #1 from September of 1982. It captures Wolverine in his essence. He’s dressed in purple with a sinister grin on his face; flashing his adamantium claws ready to disembowel an antagonist without a second thought. In my opinion, it is the best Wolverine cover of all time. Chris Claremont and Frank Miller did an excellent job on Wolverine, and help catapult him to icon status. He’s as popular as Batman and Spider-Man. I always see an artist drawing Wolverine in his or her notebook, sketchbook or spray painting him on the walls.

It’s so easy for most readers to relate and connect to Wolverine. He’s a loner, troubled by the rages that sometimes drive him to kill his enemies without any regret, and he protects the very same humans that distrusts and fears him. Wolverine is a like a metaphor for any individual who feels at odds with an unfriendly world. I’m a mature black gentleman and I often see myself as a victim of discrimination. Wolverine is almost like me. No wonder why Wolverine is my all-time favorite superhero, he’s the realest as they come.
