Most valuable interview preparation guide

The best thing you can do for an interview is be prepared.

1. You should read up on the company and find out as much information as you possibly can. Most companies have websites now, so this is generally easy.

2. Have an extra resume and a list of references. You never know if they have misplaced your resume, or if everyone you talk with has seen it. Also having references handy can help you reply quickly to the possible request to speak with references.

3. You should know what you are looking for and what you expect. You need to know what you want to do and what will make you happy. If you have no idea, or little idea, then you are less likely to get a call back.

4. You need to know what direction you want to go in. If you think you will only be in the job for a few months, then that's not going to cut it. You need to say that you want job growth, you want to learn as much as you can, and you are willing to work hard to move up.

5. Always have a question to ask. Even if it is a simple question, or something in regards to something you interviewer talked to you about earlier in the process, you should have something. This shows interest and helps you learn about what they are expecting and what they are looking for. This will also help you plan for your next interview.

6. Know your rights. An interviewer can not ask you certain questions. Know what they are and know a good answer if they come up. One example is a question asking if you are planning on having children in the near future. They can not ask you this question.

7. Be prepared to give a salary range that you expect. Make sure you study up on this so you give a reasonable answer. Also say that you are flexible (if you are), and be open to a range. This is important also because of the benefits that different employers offer.

8. Relax. This may seem easier said than done, but it can be done. One thing that helps is to think of it as an informational meeting rather than an interview. This way you do not feel like it is the end of the world if something goes wrong.
