Thinking of a summer vacation can encourage thoughts of days spent frolicking on the beach or golfing that mountain course. Or maybe images of time off from work simply relaxing by the backyard pool are more like it.
But consider the ways to have a productive summer vacation that will leave you feeling totally exhilarated and ready to face the return to any mundane duty of work or school.
This is not to suggest a boring task of creating something like an origami diagram or bonsai tree sculpting. When looking to be beneficial during a warm-weather holiday, think outside the box.
Unlike school or most jobs, you can choose what you find most appealing and benefit others as well.
Be a camp counselor or Big Brother or Sister. There are so many youths that could be influenced by your special talents and there’s always a need. And kids camps are held all summer long so one will surely fit into your time off.
Lots of churches have bible day camps, too. These are ongoing, as well, throughout the summer months.
And what about the local community college offerings? Do you have a knack for painting? They may be looking for some help with getting a public class together.
Volunteer each day of your summer vacation by working in the local soup kitchen. Or maybe the 4-legged variety is more to your liking. Most shelters will welcome you to exercise the animals in their care.
Join a conservation group and take part in beach clean-ups or endangered animal watches. But even if you don’t like spending so much time outside you can volunteer in park education centers or indoor activity projects.
Perhaps you know someone with health-related issues and you want to help out. You efforts will go a long way in campaigning and raising money for a charity walk. Or maybe by delivering meals for shut-ins is something to consider.
Check with your local newspapers or chamber of commerce. They will know what’s going on in your area, as well as researching online for areas you might be visiting during your vacation.
Many times you can combine a traditional vacation of golfing in Lake Tahoe with volunteering at their local homeless shelter. A round of golf in the morning followed by the afternoon greeting and handing out bedding to those less fortunate can be extremely satisfying.
Besides the great benefit you are providing to others, thinking of ways to have a productive summer vacation can be spiritually uplifting when you plan to its end. Therefore, when returning to the doldrums of work or school you will realize a greater productivity level from a new attitude and perspective on life.
