Did God invent religion?

by Roman Del Bosque

Created on: March 21, 2010

In a universe created and ruled, it is believed, solely by God, there is no need for religion-for God is the only reality in the universe.  In this universe God is all, sees all, and knows all.  God, therefore, has no need for religion-for religion-it appears, gauging by the role it plays in our lives, essentially, is necessary only for those who are lost, oppressed, and in need of rescue or salvation, from danger, evil, or annihilation.

Since God, we know, is neither lost or oppressed, nor needful of rescue or salvation, and because God is complete within itself, there is, therefore, no need or use for religion in God’s universe.  Thus we can conclude that God did not create religion, for God is self-sufficient.
This leaves only one possible culprit as the inventor of religion-the human mind.

It is sensible to arrive at this conclusion, for we know, and quite well I might add, that the human mind is capable of creating destructive things in our lives, for example, nuclear weapons, biological warfare-and possibly even thought warfare.  If our minds are capable of creating such destructive forces, what makes us believe that human minds are also not capable of creating religion as well?

God gave man an intelligent, ingenious mind.  Look at all the things we as a human race have accomplished: we created rockets that go far into outer space, robots that build cars by themselves, and a nuclear arsenal that we can use to defend our ourselves,  as well as a host of other things.

Given such highly complicated, technological creations, how difficult could it possibly be for the human mind to come up with the concept of religion?

This, obviously, would not have been difficult at all.

Besides, we must remember that, by nature, we as a human race, and individually, are intensely attracted to power and control, and it is likely this is how we gave birth to religion in the world.

Religion is like politics: both hunger for power and control, control and power, in either order.  To both, the more power and control the better. This is religions and the political structure’s way of thinking; it is our way of thinking, as individuals, as well.  In some form or another, to some level or another, we all want this power and control.

Parents, for instance, want and have power and control over their children.  There are also children, believe it or not, who control, or otherwise manipulate, their parents.  Governments, comprised of wealthy politicians, hold power and control over entire societies and, more often than not, have to share this control and power with their power and control-hungry counterpart, religion.

God did not create religion; God had no need for it.  We, the human race, created religion out of our deep desire for power and control. We are to blame for the monster we created, a monster now totally out of control.  Sadly, what we now fail to realize is that, we are no longer in control of our lives!-it is religion that is now in total control of us, and religion is in control because we allowed this-not God-but us!

The question is, how do we now regain that control?
