What you charge as a freelance writer will depend on a number of factors:
- The quality of your writing. Obviously the better your writing skills the higher the pay should be.
- Your writing experience. If you're just starting out chances are you won't be paid as much as someone with years of experience.
- The publisher. A lot will depend on who you are writing for. How much can the offer you according to their budget?
- The market. Different markets pay different amounts. Niche markets for example often offer higher rates of pay as there are less people able to write for them than a mainstream market.
- Competition. If the publisher has a lot of other writers that would be just as good as you, if you want the job it's best to charge a medium rate. If you charge too much they'll go for the cheaper option. If you ask too little they might think you're not any good.
It's best to look around at similar publications to get an idea of the average rates. Use this as a starting point. Consider how much time you will need/work you will have to do and adjust accordingly.
