Being from a large family always meant buying a lot of gifts throughout the year. This also meant learning quickly how to buy a gift that would not cost a fortune and would be well used and loved by the recipient(s).
One gift idea that my mother and I have used many times is a holiday selection. We would look ahead to the next upcoming holiday and buy the bride and groom a selection of holiday decoration. This could be anything from light sets and ornaments for Christmas to Easter bunnies and plastic eggs for Easter. We would wrap these in an appropriate storage container or plastic serving bowl suited to the holiday.
As I am a crafter myself, another variation is to make small ornaments for each holiday throughout the year and add Velcro to them, then on a simple store bought grape vine wreath attach several spots of Velcro. Also, add bows in complementary colors for each holiday. The newlyweds will have a wreath for each holiday and it will take up a lot less room than large traditional wreaths.
If the couple are just starting out a large clothes basket or hamper filled with paper products and cleaners is always a useful and appreciated gift. We have also done a wheel barrow filled with gardening supplies for a couple who was getting married and moving into their first real home. It was most appreciated and we knew that it would help them enjoy a hobby together.
If you are especially close to the couple a gift of time may be an option. A coupon for your time and use of a pickup to move , a babysitting certificate or even your time and expertise in a field that you are good at suck as painting or wallpapering.
As a last option I will give a gift card or money, but for that seems like a very impersonal gift.
