Card games: How to play Spit

Do you have fast hands and a quick mind? Do you enjoy pyramid solitaire? Do you love the thrill of winning a race? Well, Spit might just be the card game for you. Spit is a simple to learn, speed-based card game for two people. All you need to play is one deck of cards (jokers removed) and someone to play with. It is recommended that you use a well used deck of cards because they may get a little bent and worn from playing spit.

DEAL THE CARDS:

Begin a game by dealing out the entire deck between the two players so you each have half. The players should be seated across from each other with a fair amount of space between them, but not so much that they can’t each reach the middle of the space. A cafeteria or kitchen table is usually perfect.

Next, deal out the cards as you would in Solitare, but with only five piles across, instead of seven. You deal the first card face-up and four others face-down, next you deal a face-up card on the second pile and face-down cards on the three remaining, etc. Each player should place their remaining cards in the space between them, off to their right side, leaving space between the cards to playing later.

Now, look over the cards you just dealt yourself for any doubles. In Spit, you can combine any doubles onto one column. So, for example, if I had three Kings face-up I could combine them onto one pile (keeping them face-up) and flip over the now showing face down cards, similar to moving and flipping cards in Solitaire.

GAME PLAY:

Once both players have combined their doubles and placed their piles in the middle of the table the game is ready to start. Each player then flips the top card on their middle pile placing it in down in the middle of the playing area, next to their pile. Then, each player should try and make runs on these newly flipped cards with what was dealt in front of them. This is similar to Pyramid Solitaire. Remember that runs can go up or down (such as 2, 3, 4, 3, 2) and that a King can be played on an Ace, for example: Q, K, A, 2, A, K.

You want to place as many of your cards on the middle piles as possible while the other player is doing the same. You can play cards on your pile and your opponent's, as long as a run is continued. The game gets tricky when both players have similar cards and so you are both trying to place cards on the same pile. A good strategy here is to try and use both your hands to place cards, this takes some practice, but if you get good at it you will be lightning fast.
