The most important part of rock climbing is having the proper harness that will stabilize and hold your body securely, allow you to remain mobile even though suspended in air and can respond quickly if you need more or less tension. Finding the proper rock climbing harness that will fit your needs and keep you safe can be a challenge. But here are a few things you should look for and consider when thinking about buying a rock climbing harness for you or a friend.
*Consider your Style of Rock Climbing*
The first one we’ll look at is the multi-purpose harness. These are all-around, crag and sport harnesses designed with the new rock climbers in mind. They function smoothly in a number of settings such as rock climbing at the gym and even top-roping. Since this is a harness designed for beginners they usually are packed with extra padding in the leg loops in case of a fall or a bump up against the wall.
The second type of harness offered on the market is the alpine harness. This is engineered for those who may take long mountain trips. The do not offer much padding because it is intended for more experience rock climbers. Also it helps save weight and reduces bulk, aiding the rock climber to stay active longer without tiring out. In order to withstand the rough weather often encountered when glacier and alpine climbing, non-absorbent materials are used to make the harness. Some more innovative features are the detachable leg loops, which allows you to take a “toilet break” but at the same time keeps you tied at the waist. Also included are adjustable straps in the waist and leg areas that allow you to change clothes if it gets too hot or too cold.
If you are of a competitive nature, the competition harnesses would be the thing for you. These are streamlined harnesses making them better for speed events. It is slim in design with narrow webbing giving you the fullest possible amount of motion. They usually have no padding, accessories or fancy additions.
*Check the Fit of the Harness*
The harness must fit you and your body shape. It can’t be too tight or it will pinch you and restrict your free body movement. On the other hand if it’s too loose, it will slip, chafe and, in an inverted fall, might let you go completely. Just like normal clothing brands offer different styles and fits, so do rock climbing harnesses and you have to find the one that works best for you. Another suggestion would be to wear the type of clothing you would wear if you were rock climbing. Bulky clothes such as sweatshirts may give you a false impression as to how they fit, so be sure to come prepared.
*Check the Durability*
A great suggestion would be to find out how durable certain harnesses are. If you are a serious rock climber who participates in the sport at least once a week, you will need a harness made of stronger and more weatherproof materials. Be sure to find the answers to such questions as: “Will this harness last me a few seasons? Is the stitching tight? Are the materials strong?”
*Consider the Price*
Lastly you should check the prices. Sometimes you may find certain stores offer the same harness of the same quality but for a cheaper price. So in order to protect your wallet and budget, don’t make a hasty decision. Rather, be patient and shop around for a decent price until you are satisfied.
