How the Cleveland Browns trading Brady Quinn isn't the worst decision they ever made

by Bruce Bostwick

Brady Quinn being traded is not going to be considered the worst decision the Browns have made since returning to the league. In fact, they’ve made plenty of other mistakes and the problem has been the same since the beginning being bad management decisions. When those are made, it tends to hurt a franchise for a period of time. However, there is thought of Quinn being traded being a mistake. It can be argued on that but at the same time, he wasn’t going to succeed in Cleveland no matter what happened.

It is a wonder if even bringing the Browns back to Cleveland would have been a mistake. It just has been a case that management has given that feeling that they just can’t or won’t try to fix the problem. The drafting has been horrible and especially with picking Quarterbacks, they haven’t found a miss franchise player. You need a Quarterback to succeed and Cleveland can’t seem to find one and then a line with players who don’t put forth effort or act scared of getting hit. That debate can be for another time.

It wouldn’t be the first time that they got rid of a Quarterback that they have drafted. Tim Couch failed miserably and wouldn’t have succeeded regardless of what system he was in because of what style he played. Charlie Frye didn’t work out so well. True, he wasn’t a first round pick but he didn’t work out so well either. He wasn’t impressive and is pretty much a backup in Oakland. Spergon Wynn didn’t last long so he might have been incomplete. Then again, he didn’t do enough to be convincing to stay in the league. He isn’t playing. As for Brady Quinn, he didn’t work out so well.

The other has been not being able to find talent. They do not have the talent to be a Super Bowl team. The fans have gotten sick of it finally and it has taken notice by the front office. Perhaps now Mike Holmgren can help fix this franchise but it’s going to take a lot of effort and with Tom Heckert as the General Manager, it’s going to be interesting how that works and hopefully it will work.

As for Quinn, it’s a shame that it didn’t work out but sometimes it just doesn’t. It wouldn’t have mattered what college he came from, if he wasn’t getting the job done, he just wasn’t the guy. Is Delhomme a good signing? That’s debatable but it doesn’t seem too good and just seems rather odd to go with one who really had a bad year. Perhaps Holmgren may see something that nobody is seeing and that it could be a good thing. Personally, they’ve made enough mistakes and they can’t afford to keep making them.

It could wind up as the best decision but to claim that trading Brady Quinn was the worst decision ever made would not be fair to look at other mistakes that have hurt this franchise since 1999.
