The history of soccer cards and stickers

by Richard Cordrey

Created on: March 19, 2010

The Wonderful World of Soccer Stars series of collectable football players to be placed in albums using a bottle or stick of glue is surely the finest of these type of collections ever to grace this planet!

Hordes of excited boys would recieve their pocket money and head to the local shop to purchase little envelopes containing pictures of their favourite players. When opened you could find the players you still needed and after placing glue along the strip at the top you could put the new stamp in its rightful place in the album. To be there until the end of time (unless Jimmy from number 3 needed it for his book and you could carefully remove the player and hand it to Jimmy in exchange for his cream cake! lovely)

In England the stamps were made and distibuted by F.K.S. Publishers Ltd who began the run of success with a trial in the North of England for season 1967-68 followed by the countrywide launch for season 1968-69.

A new series came onto the shelves every new season until the sad demise in 1982 when a company called Quadriga tried for one season to continue but alas it was over!

Many people would like to know the potential value of their book and here are some of the rules for deciding its worth.

Is the book complete? Are all the stickers placed neatly? Have the order forms been removed from the back? Have the transfer sheets been filled in? What is the general overall condition? Once this has been established each book can then be valued on this particular books rarity and desirability followed by an approximate value ( based on online prices for ten years and fairs ,markets etc.)  if you have a complete book in good to very good condition.

The following is a list of each collection issued under the guise of The Wonderful World Of Soccer Stars.

1967-68 By far the rarest because of its limited availability and you will be lucky to get a complete one for less than £300

1968-69 The next three seasons are the most common and you should be able to get one of these for less than £30

1969-70 George Best on the cover £30

1970-71 The great gala collection which contained an option to send off for a sheet of players from your favourite second division team and created a set of great rarities. £30 unless there is a second division team as well then it will be a lot more.

1971-72 was the year when FKS also supplied printed stickers of all the first division team badges to fit in the album at the top of the team page.
