Workaholism: When it's time to go home

by noshie

When most people think of a 21 year old they don't typically think of a workaholic. But I am. I realized that I was a workaholic when I chose working over visiting a dying grandmother in the hospital, or worse yet when I chose work at the age of 16 over my grandmothers wake. It sounds terrible but for some reason the thrill of making that extra dollar was more seemed more important to me than anything else. At 21 I now realize the extent of my problem. I wonder at times if maybe being a workaholic is genetic. My father has always chosen work over everything and seeing him become successful is a major drive in my work ethic. I now work in the car business and go to college full time. Six days a week I wake up at 6:30am to get ready for work and then drive an hour and forty five minutes to work only to work for commission only. I go home to an angry dog and a neglected fiance. I have been engaged for only a few months now and I don't even have plans drawn up yet. Most of my girlfriends are always asking me why do I do it? I have a fiance who makes enough so that I don't have to work yet I still do. I work 60 hours a week for $45,000 a year. I'm giving up precious time with my family for money. The more I think about it the worse I begin to feel. When you come home and your own dog doesn't even recognize you its time to go home.
