The Coming of the Light

The dwellers of darkness have seen a great light.
The waiting is o'er, and day springs from night.
For Jesus is come, as the prophets foretold,
The world is fulfilled, and my cup's overflowed.

He comes as a King both to conquer and call
With faith, hope, and mercy for any and all -
Yet where is the scepter, the robe, and the crown?
He washes our feet, Who should rest on the throne.

Our Ruler and King, He is beaten and bruised,
Then mocked and mistreated and falsely accused.
Where is the great light? "They have killed it," some say.
"It never existed." "They took it away."

And yet, He is coming, for those who await.
Returning in honor and glorious estate.

But how shall they know Him, and how shall they hear?
Dark dwellers all watch, for the day is drawn near.
And we all must be ready, when He shall appear.

Where is this great light - and the day, sprung from night?
And when shall dark dwellers be freed from their fright?
The darkness shall cease and be swallowed in light
When the King shall come in, as a thief in the night.
