When you think of inexperienced drivers, you probably think of teenagers. So why shouldn’t their driving limit be raised? Some people think that the legal driving age should be raised to 18, but there are many reasons why it should not, such as working teens, gaining experience, independence, responsibility, and for the parents’ sake.
The U.S Bureau of Labor statistics show that "43.7 percent of teens nationwide between the ages of 16 and 19 were working or looking for work." So a big factor in many teenagers’ lives are their careers. A lot of teens get their first jobs when they turn 16 to pay for little things that sometimes their parents cannot, like money for the movies, clothes, make-up, and concert tickets. When you have a job, you need to arrive on time. In order to do this, you probably need a car. Teenagers cannot work on a schedule if they don’t have their own cars to get around, because then they would have to be working on their parent’s schedules, possibly making them late for work.
The earlier in life you learn something, the longer you will have experience with the subject. The same thing happens when you are learning how to drive. If you take driver's education, you will have the correct knowledge of the rules of the road, and will be able to practice successfully. You will be also able to get the extra years of experience that you would not get if you received your license later in life. Also, when you turn 18 drivers education becomes optional, making drivers less aware of the road rules and making the road more dangerous. Driver's education should be improved to teach the risks and seriousness of driving, that way teenagers will be more aware of the power that they are in. If we continue to stop bad driving habits of teenagers, then they will not have any as adults, and the roads will be safer.
Driving is a privilege, and can be used to teach a teenager responsibility. When a teen is exposed to some real life situations like paying for a car, and getting a ticket it will prepare them for the future. Most people learn from their mistakes, and the earlier in life they’re learned, the more successful the teenager will be in the adult world. Along with responsibility comes independence, something that every person needs at one point in life or another. Parents can give driving to their teens as a privilege, and teach them responsibility with their cars through giving them independence driving alone.
