As climate change looms, we find ways to help make our planet greener. By examining our day to day activities, there are little things that we can change to save energy. These minor adjustments may be small but these can collectively have an impact on the climate and our lifestyle. It is also a way to save money especially in this vulnerable economy
Here are some tips you can do:
1. Use compact fluorescent lights. These may be more expensive that the incandescent bulbs but, in the long run, it is more cost-effective. These lights last longer and require less energy. The light produced is much brighter.
2. Turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Unplug appliances from the socket. There is still standby energy being wasted for nothing. Do you see that little red light on your TV when you power off from the remote? That is energy wasted. We usually have the habit of just leaving them on thinking it does not matter too much. Imagine that blinking router lights, that light on your microwave, coffee pot, VCR, etc. All these things add up. To make it easier for you, get a power strip. It protects your appliances from sudden surges in the electric current and it will be easier for you to turn off multiple appliances at once with one switch.
3. Control your thermostat. Any device that requires heating and cooling needs energy. The hotter and colder the temperature, the more energy is used. Maintain a temperature that is comfortable to you. If it gets too cold, you can always bundle up or use additional blanket. During summer, open the windows to let the cool breeze it. Using an electric fan is cheaper than using an air conditioner. Consider the weather when choosing what to wear.
4. Carpooling reduces the number of cars on the road thus reduces the carbon emissions. Try the public transport. If you are going to a popular spot, you do not have to look for a parking space when you take the bus or train. Walk to your destination if it just two blocks away. You save gas on your car and you get an exercise at the same time.
5. When buying appliances, the bigger the size, the more energy it needs. You do not need a large fridge when there are only three of you in the house. Appliances these days have energy ratings. Get the one that is efficient and satisfies your needs.
6. Save water. People in third-world countries use a pail and a dipper to bathe. A pail of water can already clean a person from head to toe. Another option is to use a low-flow shower heads. It is available in most home improvement stores and it is easy to install. Water your plants early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is not blaring to minimize evaporation. Regularly check for leaks in your pipes. When brushing you teeth, do not let the water run while you are still brushing.
These are but a few of the tips where you can save energy. Even with only a few adjustments in your routine, it will still greatly help the environment and your budget.
