Roll out the red carpet, break out your flashiest clothes, put on your dancing shoes and get ready to Rock! A fabulous theme for a "tween" birthday is a Rock Star party. With music being such a great influence in most people's lives children and teens, especially the preteen ages can really relate to the music theme at a party.
Begin with your usual list of "to dos" for a regular birthday party; decorations, food, music, cake and invitations then focus on putting some flare into your ideas! Thankfully in our modern day we have access to many fabulous freebies on the Internet, starting with templates. Try searching for ticket templates which will make cool invitations.
On your invitation suggest a costume and help get your guests excited by giving them a little hint of things to come, perhaps a karaoke contest, dance off, prize for most wild costume or even ask your guest to prepare a song to lip sync to depending on the age range of guests. Remember the flashier and more dazzling the better!
Once you have the invites taken care of consider your decorations, my favorite decoration store is any Dollar Store. Blank CDs come cheap and if you're using them as decorations their is no need for high quality. Take four or five and hang them a couple of inches apart with fishing line from your ceiling, given the right light they will add a great deal of sparkle to your party. I suggest having this type of party start towards twilight because the hour you choose can make it that much more exciting. Add tinsel and clear Christmas lights around the room for a more flashier effect. Buy a couple of different colored light bulbs at your local hardware store to change the lighting in your home, these reasonable bulbs come in a variety of colors but I'm especially fond of the blue.
Nothing too huge needs to be done with the food, a couple of cheap silver trays from the dollar store and a load of bite sized finger foods and munchies can be set out in a buffet style. Dressing up your dining room table with a bright red or black plastic table cloth and some bright, bold colored napkins will help give the illusion of an "after hours party". Generally a set of 20 or 30 plastic wine glasses can be found cheaply and I like to stack them in a pyramid shape filled with jellybeans.... a sprinkle of glitter across
