JOHN THE GROCER
John the grocer is a man of modest means
His shop is such a wondrous sight
All decked with rich, sumptuous greens
Plump and succulent, an eye's delight.
The basket of apples fell in sunny Kent
Collected feverishly by a happy brigade
All eager to reap the fruit which heaven sent
To a dewy- morned picturesque glade.
Sumptuous strawberries waiting to be sold
Ripened by the long, sultry summer days
Are prized like a fragment of glistening gold
By the poor who survey with a longing gaze.
John was once poor and in desperate need
Of help which seldom came in his direction
Now he takes great pride in his daily deed
Of giving which affords closer inspection.
