The granny square is one of the major foundations of many crochet designs and patterns. Granny squares are also among the more easily recognizable shapes in the crochet world and they are relatively simple to construct. Because of their relative simplicity, granny squares are a good way for beginners to begin taking on larger projects. A scarf is the perfect way to start - not too big, not too small and relatively simple in design.
There are several variations on the granny square and most experienced crocheters have their favorite. There have been entire books dedicated exclusively to granny square patterns and designs, but by far the most familiar pattern is a double crocheted square that is constructed of a series of chains and double crocheted blocks. Most patterns start with a small loop of chain stitches. The traditional pattern alternates between sets of double stitches and chain stitches.
In order to make a granny square scarf, you simply need to select a pattern and make enough granny squares to build the length and the width of the scarf you want. Measure your first square and figure out how many squares you will need to make to build the scarf you have designed. Line up all the squares before you begin so that you have a rough idea of what the finished product will look like and so that it is easier to see what you need to do next.
Next begin to sew the squares together. Everyone has their own favorite method for doing this. Personally, I like to use a whip stitch, but lots of people like to single crochet their squares together. Others like to use a cross stitch - which has the advantage of appearing a bit more decorative when finished. Pick whichever method you are most comfortable with and sew your squares together. Keep lining the squares up as you go so that you know they are even.
When you have finished sewing your squares together, take your finishing yarn and work your way around the outer edge with either rows of single or double crochet, whichever you prefer. Finish off and wear your scarf with pride!
