Harsh and vulgar language should be bleeped out on television because, not only do young viewers have the potential of listening to inappropriate content, but television should be a somewhat restricted portal to entertainment. Since it reaches out to millions of viewers, there should definitely be restrictions. Of course, you will need to draw the line somewhere. What words should be monitored and what should be let slip by?
Most of the time, you can easily tell what word is being used, even if it is beeped out. However, if a television show is playing and there are young family members in the area that aren't watching, most families wouldn't want there children hearing inappropriate language. Many times, however, harsh language adds feeling to a movie. If it is an intense scene, cussing usually adds to the feeling of the moment. However, television content is able to be usually viewed by people of all age, words like the f-bomb should definitely be censored.
Children under a certain age aren't able to purchase mature and adult rated video games. Children aren't able to enter movies in a theater that are rated R. Since television is less monitored, there should be precautions taken to make sure that children aren't watching and listening to extremely inappropriate content. Parents can look at the rating of the television show or look it up on the internet before they watch the movies, but it would help parents if they knew that they didn't have to worry about their children watching television freely.
The question will additionally rise for what words should be restricted and what words won't. Something that helps draw the line is the rating of the television show. Shows with vulgar language will be rated appropriately, and will usually warn why the movie is rated how it is. This can help viewers decide if the show is appropriate or not. However, since it is mass television, some of the harsh words should be bleeped out.
Overall, cuss words should be censored on television because it reaches out to such a large quantity of viewers of all ages. it isn't like a movie theater where they can restrict which viewers can enter different movies. Children are able to view any television show, and there should be ground rules to which words can be used and which can't. It helps that the shows are rated for their content. In all, swear words should be bleeped out on television.
