Does the writer writes with a predetermined story in mind or is it the story which writes itself? When I begin to come up with a few words to arrive with the general idea I had in mind, I would start with a basic title as a guide. Then the opening sentence will be written to follow the sequence. If I didn’t write for days there would be that typical hard start like an engine which had not been oiled and run up for days. Smokes, clanking sound, and it revs to life for awhile and conks out moments later. But after attempts for some restart, the third attempt would most probably bring it out to continuous operation again. Like a writer who has clouded his mind for days or maybe weeks of not writing, the first and second sentences maybe the most crucial part and the rest will follow on later.
When you try to search something via Google, you input the words and all the associated terminologies and phrases pops out at your disposal. The rest will only be a click away to accomplish whatever you have in mind. Amazing it may seem, when a writer’s mind had been on such level of activity that his built-in search engine is on the function in a similar way, he just have to begin with a few sentences and his ‘mental bulb’ would keep on blinking for all the imaginable ideas to complete the rest of the paragraph, hence the story. One thing could lead to the other and it is this wonderful mastery of connections that truly makes a writer at home with his craft. If you watched the movie “Forrest Gump” you will be amazed by how the scriptwriter managed to begin the opening with a floating feather and end with the same feather afterwards (something which I haven’t verified if it does exist on Winston Groom’s novel upon which it was based). It’s like popping corn on a frying pan, when it does pop out, your mind is filled with options should you sprinkle it with salt or mixed it up with some butter to satisfy your whims. When the cooking is done and you nibble the stuff from the serving bowl afterwards, you forgot all the hardships of the cooking procedure and the burns from cooking oil that accidentally spilt on your face. There is just that extreme taste of the cooked stuff out of your effort much like a writer having done his piece and reading the complete story. Strange it may seem isn’t it? Thinking about how the writer writes and ending up with a popcorn. Whatever attempts you have in writing, just be sure of one thing, just let the idea pop out and do not let your mind get drowned with corny ideas. Happy writing to all my Helium friends, everyone.
