Novel excerpts: The stalker

A lite green trail followed a green ball of flame blasting down from the dark night sky. The green ball of flame headed down to the earth like a yellow falling star that shoots across the sky.  Within seconds its impact leveled trees and chard the mountain side setting ablaze the trees sounding a low rumble. The flash of amber light and flames drew the attention o the local stalker. She stood quietly leaning against a large old pine breathing softly.

She stood as still as she possibly could in the black leather armor trying not to alert her targets. Then the flash accord, it threw her concentration off rhythm causing her to look at the distant flame. The leather covered hands that held her crossbow rubbed together popping as they relaxed. The relaxing  of the grip was all that were needed to give he away.

The contract was a high paying contract from the kingdom she lived, a price that is satisfied only by the blood spilled.  The targets were of the rival kingdom that is in search of a gem on her kingdoms land. This feud has been raging for more than two hundred years. Started as two different clans but grew into two kingdoms locked in a blood thirsty fight. She was at the for front of the fight, taking out high ranking targets. Tonight it was the roving band of marauders of the night elf clans in the south.

Just as she had realized that her guard had dropped a thick plank burst through the pines side spraying its bark. The bits of bark flew into the right side of her face. She quickly crouched down knowing that her position had been known. She leaned out to sight out the amount of archers then returned to a hidden position. Double checked the bolt and cable that held tension behind the bolt. Then leaned back over with it in hand picked her target as another arrow flew past.  Breathing calmly she squeezed the leaver losing the bolt piercing the armor of one archer. As fast she could place another bolt into the channel then forced the cable back past the latch to place another bolt.

Then she pulled her long slender silver blade that held a curve at the tip like a scimitar but thicker. As it came from the sheath it held a high pitch ring sparkling in the moon light. Then exposed herself once more with the loaded crossbow still in hand.  Steady she took aim with the crossbow with one hand still calmly breathing squeezed the leaver to release the latch sending it soaring. The bolt flew straight and hard straight into the face of the other
