Attaining a healthy lifestyle is the golden parachute that everyone hopes will ease them into the aging process. Adults have become increasingly educated regarding healthy choices, awareness and prevention. While altering habits to improve health can be challenging, the subtle changes are worth the effort. These are ten important characteristics of a healthy lifestyle.

*Friendships

While rejoicing over each others triumphs and tearing over each others sorrows, friendships nourish the soul. Ohio State Universityreports that a strong social support system assists with immunity, decreases infection, aids in healing and facilitates oxytocin. Friendships improve coping abilities.

*Fitness

Spending time devoted to fitness activities is closely related to a healthy lifestyle. Fitness that is catered to the needs of the individual is the link to successfully continuing these efforts. Fitness that is ultimately enjoyed will provide maximum health benefits. Options available include climbing stairs, weight lifting, walking or tennis.

*Nutrition

A nutritional array of colorful fruits and vegetables provides a lifestyle of healthy choices. Combining protein, fruits and vegetables with carbohydrates strikes an optimal balance. Nutrition is the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Leafy green vegetables, seafood, whole grains, nuts, legumes, tomatoes, berries all have nutrition worthy accolades.

*Happiness

Genuinely being happy from within creates a positive outlook that reaps the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Being optimistic, creating happiness, and finding ways to smile might be a challenge at times. Experiencing the wonders that surround life and creating happiness will help to attain a healthy lifestyle. Adversities that are met with strength, faith and peace are the foundation of forming happiness.

*Humor

The benefits of having humor in life are endless. It provides increased immunity and provides an enhanced outlook on life. Humor has been known to inoculate against stress and pain. Finding humor in daily life will lighten the burdens that cause difficulty.

*Prevention

Education regarding prevention is the most valuable tool to increase health. Prevention screenings includes blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes checks. Facilitating dental care, flossing and regular dental cleanings has been known to assist with preventing medical issues later in life.
