Short stories: The Easter basket

by Karen Loudermilk

Created on: March 15, 2010

I remember the spring of 1979, I had been dating Butch for over a year. We are now married, have been for 30 yrs. What was so special about this Easter, was a part of Butch's family that I had known before knowing him.

Terry is Butch's cousin, and I grew up with her. Well what time she was around. She was a wild one. left home early had kids early. Terry's two children were just beautiful. She had a boy named Scottie, and a girl named Suzi. They had the darkest black shiny hair, and skin that was so smooth and light in color. Their eyes were like big drops of melting chocolate. You couldn't take your eyes off these kids.

Butch and I took them to bible school a couple of weeks before Easter. They were so sweet, everyone enjoyed them. One night we asked Scottie and Suzi what they learned that night. Suzi begins to tells of "Noses" in the bible. Her brother abruptly interrupts with his loud nasal draw and says "it's moses not noses". Just the way he said that was so hilarious! We still laugh about that today.

I new terry and her husband, who was usually out of work and was at this time, wouldn't have much for them for Easter. So I had my Mom to help me make Easter baskets for each of them.

I was only 17 at the time and lived at home. I looked up about home made easter baskets till one caught my eye. We took the baby colored varigated crotche yarn and wet it in a thin starch solution. We took the balloons shaped like big eggs and wrapped the wet yarn around them and hung them to dry on the clothes line. When dry we took a pin and burst the balloons. There was left this beautiful colored shell of an egg.

I took some lace and Rick rack and first made a large size whole shaped like the balloon on one side of it. Then took the trimmings and decorated around the opening. They looked great. I knew they were going to love them. I took colored Easter grass and put in the bottom. Filled them with candy and toys. I left them so they could be hung up, and put nice ribbon for a bow and to use to hang it with.

Easter morning I crept up to the house and knocked really loud, then I ran and hid. The surprise and look on their faces was unforgettable. They never knew it was us. The important thing was the thrill of them receiving those Easter baskets. I don't know who felt better about it them or us.
