How to plan a flower garden

Everything is turning green, temperatures are getting warmer and this is a sure sign that Spring is in the air. Gardeners from all over are getting their flower and vegetable gardens ready for the season. Now it's time for you to grow your own beautiful garden.

Where do I start?

First thing is first.  Pick out your location. Will the location be under a tree?  Will it be in out in the open?  Will it be considered Full Sun, Partial Shade, or Total Shade?  The amount of sunlight a plant receives during the day plays an important role.  Surely you wouldn't want a Full Sun plant to be in Full Shade.  The lack of sun will eventually cause the plant to turn yellow and die.

I know where I want it. What's next?

Is the location considered to be moist majority of the time or will the location dry out quickly?  Different soil types also play a role in this.  After determining the type of soil you have, you might want to check the PH.  Is it acidic or not?

Alright, I have figured out my soil type and PH.  What now?

Spring, Summer, and Fall.  You can choose plants by their flowering season.  Some gardeners like to have their plants bloom at different times, so they will constantly have a colorful flower garden through out the seasons.  While others tend to enjoy a display of vibrant colors all Summer long.  It's up to you.  Different people have different tastes.

I know the Season but what are my choices?

You have a choice of planting bulbs, perennials, annuals, tubers, and shrubs.  If you would like your garden to flourish every year with minor work, I would consider using bulbs.  They will continue to grow back every year and they will also multiply.  You can try to mix some bulbs in with your perennials and annuals for a perfect combination and a fabulous showcase of flowers.

Know your Zone.

Knowing your Zone is extremely crucial.  Some people accidentally make the mistake of planting their flowers before checking the proper Zone for that individual plant.  There are an abundance of free Zone charts available to view.  Usually they can be found at online Nurseries like Gurney's and Michigan Bulbs.  After finding your Zone, you are now ready to began choosing your flowering plants.

Where do I get my plants?

There are many places online.  If you would rather not purchase your plants online, there are other options.  You might have a nearby local Nursery.  Usually feed stores sell plants as well.

Important Tips

Till your garden at least 2 weeks prior to planting.  Add a basic fertilizer like 13-13-13.  You might want to add some potting soil like Bacto.  You can add this at the same time you are tilling your ground.  The best time to plant your flowers are in the evening.  After transplanting your plants, I recommend using Miracle Grow.  By using this and planting in the Evening, this will reduce the possibility of your plants going through shock.  Now all you have to do is water regularly and use a Miracle Grow solution every 2 weeks.
