How to handle a tension headache

What is a Tension Headache?

A tension headache, also commonly referred to as a tension headache, is the most common type of ailment that adults will experience. Many individuals have persistent pain that can last a few hours or several days. The condition can occur frequently as well. Treatment is available to lower the severity of any current pain. Prevention by learning proper stress management techniques will cause the frequency of a stress headache to diminish.

What does a Tension Headache Feel like?

 A tension headache feels like a band of of pain ranging in intensity from sharp to dull. Areas affected by a tension headache include the forehead, neck, shoulders and sides of the head. Difficulty getting a good night's sleep and chronic fatigue are also symptoms of a stress headache. Concentration can also be affected since the pain can cause one to lose focus on other activities. Light may bother individuals affected by a stress headache as well. Generalized aches in the body are also attributed to this ailment.

What Can You Do To Treat a Tension Headache?

Your doctor can diagnose whether your headache is stress related by asking you questions and listening to the patient;s symptoms. Your doctor will recommend pain relievers to start. Treatment of a stress headache usually begins of pain relievers. Many of these can be found over the counter without a prescription. Many of these are taken orally. Beware that some of these medications can cause ulcers and bleeding or damage the liver. Make sure that you are not exceeding the recommended dosage. If you are taking these OTC medications more than three times a week your doctor can give you a prescription for a stronger pain reliever or a muscle relaxer. Remember that these medications can become less effective after you are taking the pain reliever for awhile. If your headache is caused by depression or stress your doctor can prescribe an antidepressant.

Since stress is the cause of a tension headache, prevention starts with learning proper techniques to deal with life's pressures more effectively. Some techniques that are effective in dealing with stress are exercise, relaxation and meditation, time management mastery, organizational skills and having a strong social support system. If you are experiencing stress have the doctor give you a checkup. Stress can make conditions worse and can do harm to the body. Also consider counseling if you need help in managing your anxiety. Both stress counseling and group therapy are proven ways that people have dealt with their stress. Lastly, spend more time with your loved ones. Family, lovers and friends can be a positive influence in your life and provide comfort in stressful situations.
