When you get any pet you should think carefully about the life you can offer that animal. If for one minute you feel you will be unable to accomodate that animal's needs then you defer from getting a pet. It does not matter where you live, what matters most is that you are going to devote time and effort to caring for that animals needs. I would say that living in an apartment means that dog is going to get walked so often it is untrue.

I live in a van and have had at least one dog for the last two years. She has been out and about all the time. We do not have a back yard, but we have access to the outside. Sometimes it can be a bind to physically walk the dog, but then I step back and think how would I feel if I was desperate for the loo and was not allowed to use it. So come rain or shine we are out so that my little dog can take a leak or wahtever she needs.

After much deliberation I have now got two dogs, our new puppy is going to be big, as he is a lurcher. However, this just means that I have two dogs to walk instead of one. Again there are days when I feel worn out, but my dogs motivate me to get out into the open air and tread the gravel, pebbles or forest floor. They are fortunate that we live this life, as they get out and about so much.

I have found it is also good for my son, as he has grown up with the whole world as his back yard. The respect he has for the environment is incredible. He becomes enraged at the litter people drop. As he says, the animals will suffer for our laziness. As we found out. One of our dogs was very sick, and when inspecting the vomit to see what was the cause I found cardboard wrapping. There must have been food in it for the dog to have eaten it, but it was bad for the dog making it sick.

Anyway, I really think that living in an apartment makes you get out and about with your dog, helping you and them to socialise and well as get daily exercise. So for all those who think adamantly that people should not have dogs if they live in an apartment, I feel it is of benenfit to them in more ways than one. I would just like to clarify that I would not advocate someone who is disabled, infirmed or elderly to have a dog if they live in an apartment. As it would be near on impossible for them to manage getting themselves out and about let alone a dog. As I said in the beginning you have to be realisitic and think hard about whether it will be right for you and the dog.
