She was so vain
Every passing mirror a friend
Every headline comment a beatitude
There is only so much reality one can stand.
Once you get over yourself
We'll talk about our Route 66 road trip
And how strangely the dog has been acting lately
And how you want an ice cream soda in every shop
That has one on the way.
But that's for later
When the glaze has melted
and the camera shutters click their
Last goodbyes.
Have you always been this way?
Not too long ago I remember a fresh-faced country girl
Now it's snapshots and photo ops.
On paper I know your heart but
You're so vain.
