Things to do in Little Rock, AR during the summer
Little Rock is the most populated city in the state of Arkansas. Little Rock takes its name from La Petite Rouche, a small rock formation on the bank of the Arkansas river which served as river crossing, and is now a well known landmark. Little Rock had been populated since the early 1800s, so there is lots of history in the city. Little Rock is also a urban area; a mix of both history and the new age. There are many fun and exciting events in Little Rock during the summers, including:
- Visit the Little Rock Zoo. At the Little Rock Zoo, there are over 700 animals and tons of fun things to do. The Little Rock Zoo has many fun events such as Wild Wines of the World and the 9th Annual Chili Cook-Off. There is also the Arkansas Carousel, the world's only “over-the-jumps” carousel known to exist with an undulating track, one of only four built in the world. More information can be found at their website: http://www.littlerockzoo.com/home .
- The River Market District. The River Market District is the downtown area of Little Rock. There are many opportunities to see live music and do some fun shopping. Lining the street are shops that specialize in clothing, art, and almost anything else you would want to find. In the summer there is the River Market; an open air market where farmers from all over Arkansas sell their produce and shops sell crafts and etc.
- The Clinton Library. Former president Bill Clinton's presidential library in Little Rock . You can stop in anytime and have an interesting time. It is very educational and fun of memorabilia from his presidency. There are over 500 artifacts and about 1400 photographs on display that you can stop in and view almost any time.
- Garvan Woodland Gardens. This is the University of Arkansas' botanical garden. It is a 210 acre world-class botanical garden. Visit in the summer and see many of the flowers in bloom! From their website, "Garvan Woodland Gardens is an example of The Natural State at its best: a canopy of pines reaching skyward providing protection for delicate flora and fauna, gentle lapping waves that unfold along the 4 ½ miles of wooded shoreline, and rocky inclines that remind us of the surrounding Ouachita Mountains. " Some events this summer are the Peacock Tea and the Robin Tea, to celebrate and view the animals while sipping tea and eating desserts.
