In 2008 20.1 million Americans ages 12 and over were current illicit drug users. Drugs over stimulate the brain by flooding it with dopamine which creates a euphoric sensation. This further perpetuates the drug addiction. Drug addiction is the uncontrollable desire to use illegal substances. Drugs include marijuana, cocaine, crack, crank, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and prescription drugs used for recreational purposes. Drug addiction has become a severe disorder within society. Becoming abstinent from drugs is a struggle that can take years, various treatments and the need for ongoing support. Someone who is seeking treatment will be much more likely to successfully work the steps to stay clean. There are a variety of treatment options available depending on the insurance and funding that will be used.
*Assessment
Seeking an assessment provides an impartial evaluation that gives information regarding the drug dependency. Often accidents, emergencies, loss of jobs, family and social status lead to seeking a drug assessment. The assessments can be mandated, sought out willingly, or encouraged by family. This objective assessment provides information about severity of drug addiction and treatment alternatives available. It is vital to seek an honest professional assessment in order to determine the appropriate intervention that is needed.
*Detoxification
This process rids the body of drugs by allowing for withdrawal of substances. The toxins are released from the body during drug withdrawal. The procedure of detoxification can take approximately 48 hours. This painful process that is endured is the first step toward gaining abstinence from drugs. Once this process is completed then a comprehensive treatment program can be initiated.
*Inpatient treatment
Programs that are offered in an inpatient setting provide treatment for approximately 28 days or less. Intensive treatment is provided through group work and counseling to facilitate the beginning of recovery. Education, therapeutic services, and stress management are often provided as well. Programs cost $4,000-$40,000 depending on the facility, location and treatment plan for inpatient care. If insurance and resources are limited then a Medicaid application can be submitted to access treatment at a later date. Contacting the Medicaid office in the local county will assist with this process.
*Outpatient treatment
