Reasons to ditch your digital SLR camera

For years, digital single lens reflex cameras (DSLRs for short) have set the industry standard for photographers around the world.  They produce top-notch photos by using a mirror and a prism, enabling you to use one camera for a vast range of lens focal lengths.  That's the #1 reason why DSLRs are so popular.

However, there are several disadvantages to almost every DSLR.  They are inconvenient, bulky and heavy.  Because DSLR cameras use a mirror to reflect light to the viewfinder, they require a very deep body.  This allows DSLRs to produce terrific images, but lugging a cumbersome DSLR around can get very tiring.

Until recently however, small, compact and convenient cameras produced second-tier quality.  Now, improved technology allows you to get unrivaled quality in a compact package.  Photographers no longer need to tote around a bulky DSLR.  These new cameras use an electronic viewfinders, so they are far more compact without any loss in quality.  One popular consumer brand is the Olympus Pen EP-1, priced at about $650 new.

Cameras with an Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens (or EVIL cameras for short) can also keep up with the zippy DSLR.  We've all been there.  Your family and all the relatives are ready for the picture.  Every one is in position and smiling cheerfully (maybe!).  You power up your inexpensive but faithful compact digital camera.  After it has finally focused, you slowly zoom in and "click!" goes Attempt 1.  Unfortunately, Grandma Beatrice took a break to clean her glasses and your nephew is giving Uncle Richard bunny ears.  It's time for Attempt 2.  Everyone returns to their places....

Because they're so slow, many serious photographers have discarded compact cameras.  However, the new EVIL cameras have fixed this problem, increasing speed to the same level as most entry-level DSLRs.  That erases one excuse not to ditch your DSLR.

Another reason to switch to the quality compact EVIL?  Conspicuous and bulky DSLRs scream "Look at me!"  If you want to draw less attention in public places without losing quality, EVIL cameras are the way to go.  According to Gadget Lab, the Leica M series is the camera of choice for both street shooters and war reports because of its size and quality.

However, there is one sizable disadvantage to the new EVIL cameras.  They're very expensive; a good model ranges from $600 to over $5000.  A brand new Leica M goes for around $6000.

Serious photographers will find the convenient size and quality of EVIL cameras a big upgrade from the DSLR.  If you can afford it, stick with EVIL cameras like the Olympus Pen and Leica M.  Ditch the DSLR for improved convenience while maintaining consistent quality.
