The title of this subject is "Is America abdicating Christianity? Abdicating means to relinquish (power or responsibility) formally. So are we asking is American giving its power too Christianity? or is American relinquishing power over Christianity? I certainly hope it is the later. We have no business governing religion.
Our society has difficulty separating human morality, ethic's and religion. Our constitution provides for a separation of church and state. This means that the law of the land is not Mormonism or Catholicism. It is based on basic human morality and ethical principles.
If all of mankind determines that abortion is morally wrong, paramount to murder, then this is to be determined using science. When is there a viable living being inside the mother? When does society determine that this mass of cells is actually a human being. Is it when we can see a head and the protrusion of limbs or is there more to it. But at no time should a religious organizations definition of life be used in law. Nothing that comes from religion should be used in laws.
When people take an oath. This should be viewed similar to importance of a mans word. His promise to be truthful because he has given his word that he will be truthful. There is no need to go further with this. We have all heard the expression that there is nothing more valuable than a mans (or woman's) word. This is a moral and ethical principle.
I have a real problem hearing about the council that our president takes from various church leaders. I don't care what church he goes to. If the man is moral and ethical at the end of the day this is all that matters. If he consults a church leader then this is his "religion" time and I don't need to know anything about it in the context of the presidency.
When I use to supervise large numbers of people, I often sought the council of my bishop in areas where I found it difficult to separate my personal feelings from my professional common sense. I know that if I am moral and ethical, I will be all right with god.
What matter's at the end of the day is the choices I make for myself. It is a matter of free will which is one of the basic principles behind religion. I may help to create a law which allows abortion but I have the free will to make the decision whether I have one myself.
And if I am a Christian, I will not judge others, I will forgive and hope that through my example others learn my religious beliefs. But I won't develop any law which shoves religious principles down the throat of another individual.
We live in a country where the word FREEDOM is paramount. I am free to wear what I want, work where I want, be poor or rich. Be kind or a jerk. When my "freedom behaviors" effect others ability to live free of fear or offence then I am morally and ethically inclined to stop the offending behavior.
For example: I am free to walk around my yard naked. But not if I am in plain view of my neighbors who might then be uncomfortable to freely use their yards or to have their children outside to play.
But If I want this freedom, then all I have to do is properly fence and screen my property. Now if a neighbor walks into my yard and sees me naked then it is his problem not mine. Living in peace with others is not religion.
So is American Abdicating Christianity? No the christians have not taken over the government yet and the government has not started running their churches.
