The pace of modern life can sometimes make it difficult to look after ourselves properly, but to achieve true happiness in life you need a healthy body and mind. Everybody has their own routines and health can be achieved in many different ways, but if you're struggling to find a balance there are many things you can incorporate into your routine that can help you do precisely that.
1. Eat well. Don't overfeed yourself, as obesity has its own health risks, but consuming good quantities of fresh, whole foods provides your body with energy and nutrients that help it stay strong in the face of each day. Avoid sweet and sugary foods where possible, as these increase levels of the stress hormone cortisol which can raise your blood pressure and have a damaging impact on your state of mind.
2. Drink water, not caffeine. Many people turn to caffeinated drinks as they struggle to find the energy to get through the day. But caffeine gives you false highs and in the long run water actually keeps you more alert. Furthermore, drinks like coffee are diuretics and for every cup of coffee your body needs three glasses of water to compensate for the water loss.
3. Try to go to bed at a regular time each day. Sleep is important! Nearly 90% of your body's regenerative functions occur when you are asleep and losing sleep can damage both your physical and mental health. It also improves your mood – mental illnesses like seasonal disorder syndrome and depression have been linked to upsets in sleeping rhythms and have been successfully treated by sleep hormone (melatonin).
4. Take regular exercise. Exercise keeps your body strong and able to take daily strains. It strengthens your heat, thus reducing the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure, and muscles, protecting you from back or neck pains and other bone and muscle complaints. It also affects the brain, enhancing cognitive functions and is recognized by scientists as a strong anti-depressant.
5. Socialize! The health benefits of socializing are often overlooked but there is strong scientific evidence showing a link between social activity and longevity, particularly in retired people. Socializing is a great outlet for the stress and can also contribute to a good night's sleep.
6. Learn something new. The brain is a muscle that needs exercising. Learning can help to stimulate unused areas of the brain which in turn can improve your general brain function and make you feel more positive about life.
7. Take time out. Many work-places in Europe and America now recognize the need for regular breaks during the course of a day. Getting a proper lunch break and leaving your desk for five minutes every hour can significantly reduce stress levels.
8. Treat yourself! A happy person is a healthy person. If life is getting on top of you treat yourself to something you'll enjoy – a holiday, a trip to your favourite restaurant, even just a weekend in relaxing surroundings with your family. Health and happiness are integrally linked and by improving one you can have knock on positive effects on the other.
