In my opinion the dungeons and dragons (D&D) game is one of the best games to ever be created. Not only is it a great way to exercise the imagination, but it improves real life skills such as mathematics, problem solving, and even promotes teamwork. The one failing of D&D is that people are too easily intimidated by the role of the dungeon master (DM). This is completely understandable since the DM has a massive job that combines being a referee, a story teller, and more often than not, a provider of munchies and playing materials. However, there are a few simple tips that can make almost anyone a successful DM if they are remembered.
Tip number 1: Have fun.
D&D is a game, if you are not having fun, then don't play. If you are not having any fun as the DM, then it is likely none of your players are having fun either. Remember though to balance your own fun with the players. While there is a certain sadistic joy in slaughtering character after character, this can be very hard on players and you may soon find yourself playing alone.
Tip number 2: It's okay to make mistakes.
Probably the most common reason would be DM's give for not trying is that they feel they don't know the rules well enough. I have been playing D&D for over twenty years and I have made thousands of mistakes. My players got through it okay and the world didn't end. In fact, making mistakes is a great way to learn the nuances of the game, so don't let this stop you from giving the role of DM a try.
Tip number 3: Be flexible.
Players are notorious for going off even the most carefully conceived plans. While you know that the gnome sitting on the street has nothing to do with the adventure, the players don't. Instead of allowing yourself to become frustrated, take advantage of the opportunity. Some of my most memorable gaming sessions have come from players doing something unexpected.
Tip number 4: Cool is the rule.
Sometimes the rules or the dice say that a players action can't happen. When this happens, think about letting it happen anyway. Players love when they get away with cool stuff. Be careful though to not be too cool, games that have no challenge can cause a sharp loss in player interest.
Tip number 5: Avoid arguments.
There are going to be times when someone disagrees with what you say. Instead of hashing out the disagreement on the spot, wait until after the game and then discuss it. A good idea is to make
