10 things that will get you in big trouble at work

Work is one the most important aspects of our lives.  We probably spend longer with our work colleagues each day than we do our families and loved ones.  It is, therefore, worth ensuring we do the best we can at work to keep things on an even keel and avoid doing anything that might get us into trouble or make the atmosphere difficult to work in.  There are a number of ways we could get ourselves hauled over the carpet, so, unless you are looking for a career change, it might be best to avoid the following ten situations.

1. Mistakes.

We are all human, and all humans make mistakes.  Often, if we are upfront about any mistake that we make and work to both correct the error and prevent other similar mistakes in the future, the boss and the organisation you work for are likely to accept that you have done all you can.  It will not be acceptable if you try to hide the mistake and do nothing to correct the problems that may arise as a result.  This shows a lack of responsibility and is likely to put you in a bad light and potentially lead to disciplinary action.  If you make a mistake, advise your line manager, preferably with a plan for correction and mitigation, and take on the chin any admonition that might come your way.

2. Company Property

Misusing or misappropriating company property is a serious offense and in some cases can lead to instant dismissal.  This is clearly the case if you are stealing money or items of value from your employer.  However, often people misuse or misappropriate in a small way and do not even consider it wrong.  Perhaps this is printing personal materials from the work printer, photocopying personal papers or taking home the odd piece of stationery.  You can, though, imagine the cost to your employer if everyone did that.  Increasingly, employers are losing tolerance with this type of behaviour, so think twice before taking advantage of what you might think of as a perk.

3. Internet use

Since the internet has become so prevalent in all our lives, and most people have access from their workplace, surfing the net has become one of life’s national past-times.  Everything from collecting emails, to finding information to purchasing goods and services can be done on-line.  Most employers will have a certain tolerance to internet use during the working day.  Be clear what level of tolerance your employer has in this regard and ensure you remain well within
