How to connect crochet squares

by Carole Somerville

Created on: March 09, 2010

Creating squares is excellent practice in developing crocheting skills and is often used as an introduction to crochet. Squares can be made with different types of yarn, different colours and new stitches can be learned while making squares so each creation might incorporate something new into your work.

As long as each square is the same size, they can be connected together to make blankets, shawls, bags and other objects. Alternatively, small equal sized squares could be connected at the centre of a blanket and larger, equal sized squares used on the outer edges, as the blanket size increases. As long as all squares fit together within the shape required!

Connecting crochet squares together is very easy. Firstly it would be a good idea (depending on how many squares you are connecting) to decide on whether they are to be joined in a pattern, or randomly. You might wish to separate colours or arrange squares containing similar stitches together or even apart. Arrange your squares as you intend to connect them. Be sure they do line up stitch by stitch.

Crochet squares can be sewn together or you might wish to connect them by using a slip stitch. Connecting the squares can add to the creativity of the project. For instance if you crochet them together, you might use a coloured yarn that vividly stands out and enhances the appearance of the finished article. A more time-consuming method is to create a braided pattern between squares while crocheting them together.

To stitch crochet squares together, thread a large blunt needle with the coloured yarn you prefer and use a sewing technique that suits you (back stitch or mattress stitch for example) to join them.

To connect crochet squares by crocheting them together, place squares wrong side together. Insert hook at end of both squares, pull through to connect the squares, yarn around needle, pull through and chain 1, *insert hook into next stitch of BOTH squares, yarn over needle, pull through and chain 1, repeat from * to end of row.

Crochet squares are fun to create and can be used for many purposes including travel rugs, scarves, a throw, cushions, bags and sweaters. If you are making squares as a way to develop your crochet skills, enjoy experimenting with different stitches and colours and then look forward to deciding on how you might connect your squares to make the article of your choice.
