Poetry: America

Stealing Heaven

Slow, slow, slow
the rat multiplied,
snakes diversified,
and all assets bought and tied.

Then the clock clicked twice,
the serpent struck,
the scales tipped,
and the balance slipped.

A chill crept forward
(a warning on the wind)
spreading, spreading, spreading
restless, relentless, hopeless

A whisper locked away,
“Wake up.  Look out.
A mistake has been made
and now there is a price to pay.”

The sun and moon shone true
but a haze still grew.
Deception flourished in the fog
stealing, laughing, hoarding.

The rooster was sold,
the farm grew cold,
the business closed,
the working people hosed.

Failure, success, the future
weighs on the tired shoulder
more heavy, foreboding than before
enveloped within a foreign taint.

The whisper becomes more urgent,
“Wake up.  Look around.
A mistake has been made
and now you all will pay.”

Who gave America away?
