Finding one's way

by Teresa Little

Created on: March 08, 2010

Have you ever listened to someone explain their dreams as if they were a concrete reality, with such a surety that the next time you saw them, they were already updating you on their life’s plans? I used to hate those people. Okay, maybe not hate, but I was jealous. Why couldn’t I find my way? What made them so special? I often felt frustrated and angry. I was too lost to even know there was a road, let alone that I held the road map.

Life is hard. As a society we have forgotten the simple pleasures, the down time that lets our True Selves relax and focus on our journey. We have demands on our time, responsibilities, friends, families, the cat, the dog, that new game we have to play or a sixty hour work week to distract us, among another million things.  The choices are numerous causing little things, like how we want our coffee to take an inordinate amount of time, let alone the what do I want to do with my life questions we all face. It took me awhile, but I’m finding my way.  You can too.

Deep down, in our heart of hearts, we all know what we want to be and why we are here. I knew in the fourth grade I wanted to write. Knew it the first time my mind strung some imaginary tale together and my pen put it to paper. Back then I felt the joy of my passion, the happiness of creating and the wonder involved in the process. I knew nothing of the fear or doubts that later gripped me. I didn’t ask myself if I should write, if I could earn a living at it or even if I was any good.  It was, and is, something I love.

If you aren’t sure of what your heart is trying to tell you, try imagining what you would do if every need were taken care of? How would you spend your time? Take stock in where you are and where you want to be. Yes, we would all like to have the perfect spouse, 2.5 kids, house with the white picket fence and money in the bank. Life is not about these things. It is about the journey and what you make of it. The key rests in what makes you joyful, fills you with such excitement that you can’t wait to start the day and when your head hits the pillow at night, not only are you grateful for the day; you are filled with such peace you sleep soundly. When you have that everything else will fall into place, which ties into another important key, Faith. Have faith in God, the Universe, or yourself that you will succeed. If faith is in short supply, try hope. Hope often leads to faith. Faith leads to love. Love leads us to Live our Life. Living moment by moment we find our way.
