2010 Academy Awards red carpet winners and losers

by Lynette Alice

Created on: March 08, 2010

The 2010 Academy Awards red carpet was filled with winners and losers before a single Oscar was ever awarded. Some people showed up looking ravishing and polished while a few looked like they probably should have stayed at home or had their head checked. Oddest of all there were no less than 4 references to Lady Gaga and her Grammy Awards red carpet appearance which goes to show when it comes to haute couture, it may be the domain of the musicians more than actors.

Monique who was up for an Oscar for her role in Precious made an early splash. It wasn't because she was the best or worst dressed on the red carpet but because she showed up in a conservative Tadashi Shoji blue gown. Many feared Monique was going to go overboard as she has been known to do in the past, but she was lovely rocking a simple sexy look with nothing more eye catching than a flower in her hair.

Sandra Bullock was absolutely darling in a Marcheesa gown. It was tastefully beaded with a stunning bodice, but the lipstick screamed "look at me" just a tad too much. She was perfection aside from that, it just makes you wonder if anyone told her that subtle shades are in.

Mariah Carey nearly had a fashion emergency but managed to avoid revealing more than she planned on. Mariah wore what a rather plain dress that didn't do much to flatter her assets - which are ample and really deserve it - and went a bit overboard on the bling. Mariah has yet to learn after years of awards shows that she is a beautiful woman on her own and has no need to wear a zillion pieces of over sized glittery pieces of jewelry like the monstrous bangle on her wrist that snagged on her dress right at the bust. Of course every able bodied male within 30 miles was there to offer a hand if necessary.

Diane Kruger epitomized the phrase "hot mess" with her attempt at haute couture on the red carpet. She wasn't an absolute red carpet loser but she was nowhere near a winner either. She wore a gown form the Chanel 2009 line that should have stayed in 2009. If she could have walked in backwards and hidden the front she may have pulled something sexy off. As things worked out she was way too ruffled, crinkled, and what was the deal with that choker/scarf combo? She looked like she was dressed by the fashion impaired, and she needs to realize that just because the designer is a heavyweight in no way means everything they make works for everybody. Truly awful. She should pray she doesn't have to take the stage so the public doesn't
