Want to make a granny square scarf? Which granny square would you like to use? There are hundreds of variations to choose from and no wonder since the granny square has been in continuous print for over 100 years. This versatile little square has been around from colonial times, through the great western push to expand America. The granny square was even alive in the 1960’s and 1970’s when this simple square exploded with color to produce fanciful ponchos, skirts, vest, purses, almost anything you can thing of.
The granny square has remained popular because of its simple use of easy to remember stitch combinations and reliance on scrap or left over yarns. Even the tiniest ball of yarn can at least make one round of a granny square. You can even mix yarn types and weights and still have a fabulous square.
Before you begin your granny square adventure you will need a few things: any color or combinations of yarn or yarns, crochet hook (I recommend an H, it’s not too big and fits most yarns comfortably, scissors, ruler or tape measure, basic crochet skills and time. Not a lot of time either, just spare minutes snatched here and there will do. The granny squares makes a great take along project: easy to pick up, easy to work.
