Christian perspectives on euthanasia and suicide

Euthanasia and suicide is a topic on which most Christians would most probably be passionately against, in this piece I will review the popular Christian attitudes to Euthanasia and suicide.

Some Christians may be supportive of Euthanasia although these are few they may be some. They would justify euthanasia by saying that in the bible it says, "love your neighbour" therefore giving your neighbour a less painful and a more dignified one would be the correct thing to do. However these are very much in the minority.

Christians generally believe that the entire human race is created in the image of God; therefore from a Christian perspective all life is absolutely invaluable to God, Euthanasia or suicide may be seen as playing God and taking the decisions of life or death on to ones self, this is one of the reasons why so many Christians are passionately against these things. Others may also see it as destroying one of Gods Creations, which were perfect, and in his image.

The Catholic Church regards Suicide as a mortal sin, for this reason the majority if not all Catholics are strongly against this. Any person from a catholic perspective to commit suicide would be guilty of a sin so great that they would not be allowed through the gates of heaven.

The Ten Commandments (one of the most revered set of rules from Christianity) says, "Do not kill" this is the main argument for Christians against Euthanasia and Suicide because in both cases you are either taking your own life or taking that of somebody else. Christians see these rules as the most important guidelines for life and would seek to keep them by any means possible.

Many Christians believe that God can turn the situation of any person around no matter what the case as Jesus healed the sick and made the blind see in the bible, therefore a Christian would not seek to end ones suffering through Euthanasia but would prefer to pray for and believe for a miracle.

In genesis Chapter one verse 28 it says "man is gods steward on earth" this means that man has been given the responsibility to take care of and rule over the created earth, therefore by killing yourself many Christians would see it as neglecting the responsibilities that God has given us and many would see this as wrong.
