What is a spiral crochet pattern? Well, that depends on who you ask. For some it is the technique used in making rugs or Amiguumi objects, for others it is a tendril, also called a curlicue.
The technique used in Amiguumi is the use of working in the round in one continuous flow, you do not stop and turn your project and you do not make chains that count as a stitch. This creates a flawless look of uninterrupted stitches. Here is a quick pattern to help understand how to make a flat spiral (for coasters and rugs) and the use of this technique in an Amiguumi project.
3-in-one Spiral crochet pattern:
What you will need: 1 ball or skein of Yarn, Hook - Your choice size, Stitch marker.
Abbreviations Guide:
Ch – Chain Dc – Double crochet Dec – Decrease Hdc – Half double crochet Sc – Single crochet Sl st – Slip stitch St – Stitch Tc – Triple crochetPlease choose your yarn in accordance with your hook – Crochet tread for numbered hooks, light weight (like Sport or baby) for hooks B – F, medium weight (like worsted weight) for hooks F – N, and Bulky weight or double strands for hooks N, P and Q.
Ch 4, connect with sl st to first ch creating a loop.
Row 1: 8 sc in loop spacing evenly around. Note: do not ch and do not turn. This pattern is worked in one continuous round.
Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, place marker in first sc, (2 sc in each sc) around.
Row 3: Sc in next sc, place st marker, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc) around to last sc, 2 sc in last st before place marker.
Row 4: Sc in next sc, place st marker, sc in next sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc) around to last sc, 2 sc in last sc before marker.
Row 5: Sc in next sc, place st marker, sc in next 2 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc) around to last sc, 2 sc in last sc before marker.
Now that you have that down let’s make a bowl out of this test piece!
Row 6 – 8: Sc in next sc, place st marker, sc in each sc around.
Row 9: Sc in next sc, place st marker 2 sc in next sc, (sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around to last 3 sc, sc in last 3 sc.
