Creating crochet flowers is exciting. You can make fabulous garden themed afghans, intriguing refrigerator magnets, elegant hair accessories and unique gift trims with a little bit of fine doily thread or left over balls of yarn. Many flowers use at least two colors, but you can use more or less according to your preference.

• Making Flowers

~Flat Petal Flowers: Chain six and make a ring by slip stitching into the first chain. Chain one and single crochet in the ring. Each petal is worked over four stitches. Calculate the number of petals you want in your flower accordingly. First petal: chain three. Work double crochet cluster in next single crochet. (DC Cluster: *Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over draw through two loops on hook. [repeat from * two times], yarn over, draw through four loops on hook.) Double crochet in next stitch. Second petal: slip stitch in next stitch and repeat stitch pattern for first petal. Third petal: repeat stitch pattern for second petal. Finish off by joining with a slip stitch to base of first petal.

 • Layered Petal Flowers: Each petal is formed within chain loops made of double crochet and chain stitches. Chain six and make a ring by slip stitching into the first chain. {Chain three counts as first double crochet in round.} Round one: chain six. (This equals one double crochet plus chain three at the beginning of your round.) Double crochet in ring and chain three for as many flower petals as you want ending on chain three. Join to third chain of first chain six.

 • Round two: single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet twice, half double crochet, single crochet in each loop around. Join with a slip stitch to first single crochet of round.

 • Round three: work behind previous petals and around double crochet posts in round one. Chain seven (counts as double crochet plus chain four. Double crochet around next dc in round one, chain four to make loops for your next layer of petals. Finish round by joining to third chain of first seven chains.

 • Round four: work in loops to make second layer of petals. Single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet three times, half double crochet, single crochet in each loop around. Join with a slip stitch to first single crochet of round.

Continue making layers and petals by adding one chain to respective loops and one double crochet to respective petals following pattern guidelines,
