Favorite Madonna songs and what makes them favorite

by John Myers

Created on: March 07, 2010

Having ‘come of age’ in the early eighties and beyond, I associate Madonna songs with different chapters of my life: picking up her first single “Everybody” during my college days, “Sky Fits Heaven” as a backdrop to a thunderstorm on the Amalfi Coast, romantic moments listening to “Rain”, and countless others.  In her almost thirty years creating music, Madonna has amassed a catalog as extensive and classic as those of the Beatles, Elvis, and Michael Jackson

Madonna’s enduring ability to stay relevant has cemented her distinguished status forever in pop music history.  Putting together a top ten list of the greatest Madonna songs is a difficult task, as her extensive volume is filled with pop music gems.

Madonna’s put her life on the stage for all to see, and her innate talent to share her gifts has served to entertain and delight us for many years.  Herein I present my list of Madonna’s Top 10.  Some you’ll agree with, some you won’t.  Many of them invoke personal memories, which pay homage to the influence Madonna’s had on my life.  She has provided for me and for many others a soundtrack for our lives.  I’m sure many of them will spark memories in your own minds.  Relive the memories and enjoy…

10- Hung Up – Sampling ABBA’s “Gimme Gimme Gimme (a Man After Midnight”), this one is Madonna’s biggest selling single of all time.  At a time in her life when many artists would have gone off into obscurity, Madonna once again proved her relevance with this great track.

9 - Rain – The only song on the list from the 1992 “Erotica” CD, “Rain” is an inspirational ballad with beguiling crescendos that are goose-bump inspiring. A classic ballad!

8- Frozen – Frozen was the first single off of Madonna’s “Ray of Light” album, which parked yet another new direction for the singer.  A collaboration with famed techno-producer William Orbit, the dark themes of both the song and the video make for a very captivating experience.

7- Lucky Star – This track is emblematic of what made Madonna so popular on the dance music scene of the early eighties.  With an irresistible dance track, this one helped to transform the club sounds of the early eighties and beyond.
