Poetry: A mother's worst nightmare

by Sunshine Simmons

Created on: March 07, 2010

Cold
Cold is my blood as I unfold it
The piece of tattered paper
Folded a million times
Read and reread
Scribbled and scratched
Written and rewritten
Then hidden

Empty
Empty is my soul as I read the pain
Unscrambling the meaning
In words written and rewritten
Read and reread
Then hidden

Immense
Immense is the fear
The bile rising in my throat
The date on the bottom
The time just above
The place in the plan
Too late
Too late

Angry
Angry at myself
Why didn't I know
Why didn't I see
I shared everything
Everything
Everything
She shared nothing with me

Alone
Without her
Darkness
Emptiness eats my flesh
My soul
Devoured by loss
Enslaved by hate

Last week I saw her smile
Today spins away
I'm afraid I'll forget
Dimples and one slightly crooked tooth
Laughter echoing
Footsteps running
Water splashing
The smell of her favorite shampoo
