How to make a scarf from granny squares

by Wendy Brumback

Created on: March 07, 2010

The Granny Square.  Perhaps the best known stitch in the crochet world.  We use them to make everything from afghans to skirts, from pillows to cardigans.  Included in this is the ever popular scarf.  To make a scarf from granny squares is a simple 3 step process.

Step 1.  Prepare.  This step has two parts – one to decide on the size of your scarf and two, getting the materials together.

- Deciding on the size of your scarf is simple.  Most of us know if we like long or short scarves, wide ones or thin.  Measure your favorite scarf to get an approximation.

- Now using scrap yarn create a granny square with your desired hook size.  Granny squares can be one row or several depending on how big you wish to go.  If you like you can make the square as  big as the chosen width, or divide that width into two and make your granny squares so that your scarf measures two granny squares across.  You can even choose to simple make a lot of single row granny squares and join then together (which works great if you have a lot of little bits of yarn in many different colors.)

- Once you have chosen the size you would like for your squares divide the length you would like your scarf to be by the size of the granny square.  This will probably give you a number with a decimal, just round up or down to the nearest whole number. (rounding up will make the scarf a little bit longer, rounding down will make it a little bit shorter.)  The smaller the square the closer you will be to your chosen length.

- Times the number of squares you will need for the length by the number for the width and you will have the number of granny squares you need to make.

- Example:  If you desire your scarf to be 12” wide by 40” long and your granny squares are 4” X 4” then divide 4 into 12 which equals 3 – that is your number across and divide 4 into 40 which equals 10.  3 times 10 equals 30.  So you will need 30 granny squares for this scarf.

Now the granny square is known for its use in scrap projects, so if you have extra yarn lying around now is a good time to use it.  However, we all have our favorite colors, or we know exactly what jacket we would like to wear this scarf with so if you like go ahead and purchase yarn for the project if you like.

-          To determine who much yarn you will need pull apart the granny
